AsianOphthalmology was started on April 6, 2006 as a yahoo discussion group on the internet by Dr. Sarbjit Singh, consultant Ophthalmologist at Dr Shamsher Singh Eye Hospital, Khanna in the northern state of Punjab in India. Over the years, under the patronage of Prof Dr. Daljit Singh of Amritsar (India),guidance of many senior colleagues and with participation of many members from all around the world, specially from the asian countries, the journey has been more than worthwhile for all.
The aims & objectives were to have a discussion group available 24/7 on the internet to anyone who might have a professional query or some interesting experience to share. One could do that via an email to the asianophthalmology yahoo group and all members would receive the mail instantaneously. Anyone who wanted to respond could do so in a similar fashion.
This interaction amongst the 800 odd members has been instrumental in enhancing professional knowledge and exposure. Besides exchange of knowledge and experience, the group has helped us to improve other skills notably ophthalmic photography and good practices in running operation theatres and clinics.
Various Ophthalmic Societies like All India Ophthalmological Society, Delhi Ophthalmological Society, Karnataka Ophthalmological Society, Bombay Ophthalmological Society, Uttrakhand Ophthalmological Society, Punjab Ophthalmological Society both of India and Pakistan, International Society of Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery, Small Incision Cataract Surgery Club etc have always been ready to help us during their meets.
Hopefully, our alliance shall grow stronger with each passing day making world ophthalmology stronger in the process.
